FBI Subpoenaes 1,200 St. Charles Parish Court Records of DWI Cases
The Federal Bureau of Investigation has subpoenaed 1,200 records from the St. Charles Parish Clerk of Court’s Office; the records involve driving while intoxicated (DWI) cases from Jan. 1, 2009 to May 31, 2012, which was during the final term of former District Attorney Harry Morel. The records subpoenaed by the FBI asked for documents of “all individuals who were arrested for driving while intoxicated (DWI) for which court files exist, whether or not the case was prosecuted, not prosecuted, dismissed, refused, or referred to pre-trial intervention.” Special agent Michael Zummer said, “Unfortunately, I can’t comment about any kind of grand jury investigation.”
The current St. Charles Parish District Attorney is Joel Chaisson who took office in June 2012. Chaisson comment on the subpoena by saying he is assisting the FBI with obtaining the documents but that there is no other comment he can make on the subject. He said, “Since their inquiry is ongoing, I have been asked by them not to make any comment other than to say that this matter does not involve me or current district attorney’s office staff in any way.” The DWI documents were picked up by a federal authority on January 17th.
